Created/published- 1941 May

2.) Setting
  • Outdoors
  • The lighting is bright
  • Rural setting
  • Daytime

3.) What is in the photograph
  • Two adults
  • Clothing that people would wear when working in the field
  • A distinguished feature is the dry land surrounding them
  • What catches my sight first is the dry land

4.) Structures
  • Large spacing in the photograph
  • Field surrounded by dry sand and plants

5.) The tone in the paragraph is sad, or heavy. I believe this because it shows the hardships people went through during the Dust Bowl period. It is a negative tone as well because of the way the people look and the condition of the land. However, it does show how hardworking most people were during the Great Depression so that they could have a better future.

6.) I believe that this picture best describes what people had went through during the Dust Bowl period in the Great Depression. It shows how many people’s fields were now just sand, dirt, and dead crops. It shows how people tried to make the best out of their hardships to have a better future. In this picture, it shows a woman holding some type of box on her head and a man with some type of wagon. These are two of the few people who were affected by the Great Depression.

7.) On of the questions that I would ask the photographer is did these people mind that you took a picture of them? Another question that I would ask is what made you want to take a picture of these certain people?

2.) Setting
· Outdoors
· The lighting is bright
· Rural environment
· Day

3.) What is in the photograph.
  • There are no people
  • Dry plants, half dead plants catches my sight first

4.) Structures
  • Large spacing
  • Field is not in good condition
  • Field is surrounded by dry sand and plants.
5.) The tone is sad because of all the dead, dry plants, in the middle of no where.
6.) In this photograph, I believe that this shows the Great Depression in the Dust Bowl era. In the Dust Bowl, all of the crops and plants were dead and there was barely any food. And I think that this picture demonstrates that period of time.
7.) One of the questions that I would ask the photographer is where was the picture taken and how did she find the field? The second question that I would ask the photographer is what did you want to show or prove when taking the photo?

2.) Setting
· Outdoors
· Semi-bright
· Rural area
· Daytime
3.) In the photograph, there are:
· People (about 3 adults)
· Old looking clothing
· Old, worn down looking shop
· The condition the shop is in
4.) It is a business; the condition is very poor looking. Looks like it’s in the middle of no where.
5.) The tone is sad because of the condition of the shop and the way the people look. It is showing how bad of an impact the Great Depression had on not only businesses, but people as well.
6.) When I first saw this picture, I thought that it was very sad. I believe that this is one of the best pictures that demonstrate the era of the Great Depression. It shows what happens to businesses during this period of time and also what happens to people. The old, worn look of the coffee shop shows the hardships during this era.
7.) One of the questions that I would ask the photographer is what inspired him to take the picture that this certain place? The second question I would ask him is how he found this certain place.

1. Lange, Dorothea 1936 July
2. The setting of this photograph is outside on a farming field near Eutaw, Alabama in 1936. It is day time. This is a rural area. It appears to be midday.
3. In this picture, I see three people hoeing a field. They are all adults of African-American descent. They are wearing simple clothes that are light in color, probably so that they don't attract the heat from the sun while they are working. They are also all wearing hats and hoeing the field with a hoe. The size of the field and the fact that these slaves had to do all the hoeing by hand really caught my attention.
4. There are no structures in this picture.
5. In my opinion, the tone of this photograph is heavy because it is depressing to see that people realize slaves were overworked and it still persued. The picture has a negative tone.
6. This picture shows the massive amount of work the slaves had. When I saw this photograph, I was amazed at the size of the field and at the fact that there were only three people working on it. They didn't even have machines to help ease up the work load. I did, however, like looking at the field because in the 21st century, it is not often when you see that much land without a car or business in sight. There are not many rural areas left like this one.
7. If I could ask any questions to the photographer I would ask:
a) Were there any other slaves working on the farm with the htree in the picture?
b) How far away was the next home or building?

2. The setting of this photograph is outdoors near Greensboro, Alabama in 1941. It seems to be late in the day. The area appears to be rural, due to the fact that there are only one, possibly two, visible structures in the distance. It appears to be late afternoon, due to the color of the sky. It looks like it is either late spring or summer because of the grass and flowers in front of the table.
3. In this photograph, I see seven milkjugs on some kind of table. There are one or two structures in the distance. There are no people in this picture. What really caught my eye was how different things are now, then they were back in the 1940's. The way the milkjugs were shaped and the materials they were made out of interested me.
4. There are two structures in the picture. The structure on the right looks to be a home or maybe a barn. I cannot tell what condition it is in. The structure on the left appears to be a house. It too is in the distance, therefore, I cannot tell the condition it is in. They are not very close, but not very far. It seems to be that the structure on the right could maybe be a barn for the structure on the left. A tree is next to the structure on the left, but other than that, there is nothing really surrounding either structure.
5. The tone of this photograph looks positive because there is nothing bad about it. It is taken in a peaceful area and everything looks nice there.
6. When I saw this photograph, it made me realize how much things have changed since the 1940's. I liked how there were hardly any buildings and everything was so rural. The milkjugs surprised me because I didn't know what they were until I read the caption. Seeing a huge field like this without any cars or society near is not something people in the 21st century are used to seeing. It looks peaceful there. 7. If I could ask any questions to the photographer, I would ask:
a) Was there a farm in the distance?
b) Why were there milkjugs sitting on a table in, what appears to be, the middle of nowhere?

2. The setting of this picture is outside in Alabama. The lighting is good because it is daytime. This appears to be somewhat urban because of the Coca-Cola shack and the road, however, there is no other stores or shacks around it. I cannot tell what time of day.
3. In this photograph, I see a Coca-Cola shack with what looks like chimneys to the right of it. There are no people visible. I noticed that even though it is daytime, the normal operating hours for a business or store, the windows and door are boarded up. It seems that the store was no longer in business.
4. In this picture, there is a Coca-Cola shack, two chimneys, and two structures in the distance. I cannot tell whether the structures in the distance are homes or businesses. The Coca-Cola shack appears to be in pretty good condition, but the fence looks a little worn. The structures are far from the shack and the chimineys are in the lot next to it. I see a powerline and a road, so there are probably more structures surrounding the shack on the other side, but I cannot tell for sure.
5. The tone of this photograph is heavy because it shows one of the many businesses that were hurt during the Great Depression. Also, the chimneys next to the shack look like they once belonged to homes that could have possibly burned down. It looks like this was once a popular location to get-together.
6. My response to this photograph is that this looks like it was once a cheery place. However, it now looks rundown. Seeing the chimneys in the background made me think about what this location used to be. I like to look at the signs on the shack. It is interesting to me that after all these years, the Coca-Cola signature still has not changed.
7. If I could ask any questions to the photographer I would ask:a) Why are there chimneys in the lot to the right of the shack?b) Are there other businesses surrounding the shack? If so, are they shut down as well?

2. This photo takes place outdoors in rural Alabama during the day.
3. There are six African Americans around 30 years of age. One thing that catches my eye is that everyone is wearing a hat, which tells me its summmertime.
4. There are to businesses in the background, one is a gocery store and the other is an eating establishment. These buildings are a little decrepit and run down.
5. This photo to me has a heavy tone due to the fact that none of these people can get jobs because of the Depression.
6. The Alabama town that this picture takes place in must have been busy. I can tell because there are many people just sitting around. Also this picture shows a small business that appeared to be a hot stop among the town folk. This picture shows what it must have been like during the Great Depression in the South.
7. My first question to ask the photographer would be "Why is there a stack of cardboard boxes on a dolly in the middle of the photo?".My second question to ask the photographer would be "What was happening on October 31, as there a sign in the background with that date?"

2. This photo takes place outdoors on a rural farm during the day.
3. There are two African Americans who appear to be young of age. They are wearing white clothes and sun hats, meaning it must be summertime. The first thing that catches my eye is the fact that there is only two of them to hoe that whole field.
4. There are no buildings in this photo, but there are some trees in the background.
5. This photo has a negative tone because the children aren't happy that they have to work.
6. My response to this picture is at least these children have a job. Many people during this period in history couldn't even get that lucky. Also there is only two of them, making that field a tough job to tackle.
7. My first question to ask the photographer would be, "What is the crop that these children are trying to grow?". My second question to ask the photographer would be, "Why do they have no shoes on?".

2. This photo is of an Alabama church during the day, which is good for the lighting.
3. There are no people in this photograph, and the first thing that catches my eye is the very nice church, even though most of the buildings during this time are decrepit.
4. There is am African American church in this picture. It is in surprisingly nice condition with a few trees surrounding it.
5. This photo has a neutral tone.
6. My response to this photo is what a nice church. I suppose it must be nice because this is where the people hurt from the Great Depression kept their hope. Even though so much "bad" was happening, the citizens always kept hope and faith that the depression would roll over.
7. My first question to ask the photographer would be, "Did the citizens attend services everyday or oonly once a week?". My second question to ask the photographer would be, "How many people could be sitted in the church?".

2. The setting of this photograph is outdoors and was taken during daylight hours. It appears to be an urban area in Greensborough, Alabama.
3. There appears to be at least three but possibly more people in the lower left quadrant of the picture. They are not easy to see and I can’t determine an age for any of them. The one standing up, a man, is wearing dark pants and a light colored shirt. I can’t tell what the two women sitting down are wearing. A distinguishing feature of this picture is the spire to what looks to be a church. It towers over the other buildings in the picture. The spire is defiantly the eye-catcher in this picture.
4. The structures featured in this photograph are businesses. Toward the rear of the photo is a church. The buildings appear to be in overall good condition. There is no space between the buildings. One begins right where the previous one ends. There are streets around the buildings.
5. The tone of the photograph strikes me as light. There are more spaces of lighter colors than dark and heavy. It is a positive photograph.
6. My thoughts on this photograph are that it is a relaxed scene in a small town in Alabama. There are not many people in the picture and doesn’t seem to be very busy. It also seems light and cheerful in the scene.
7. One question I would ask the photographer would be “Who are the people in the lower left corner?” The second question I would ask would be “What are names of the stores featured in the photograph?”

  2. The setting is on the front porch of what may be a porch of a house or store, outdoors. It is mostly light so I assume the photo was taken during the day. It looks to be in a rural area but is hard to tell.
  3. There are four African-American children’s feet and legs featured in the photograph. All are probably under 16 years of age. The girls wear dirty dresses, while the boy is dressed in dirty and torn pants. The distinguishing feature in this photo is the horrible state of the clothes the children are wearing. The fact that all the children were barefoot caught my eye first.
  4. I think the building featured in the picture is a home but I am not entirely sure. It could be a storefront. It appears to be kind of run down, with pieces of the porch missing some sections. I cannot see if anything surrounds the building, though a fence or street may run around the structure.
  5. I think the tone of this photograph is heavy. It is sad to see the barefoot children wearing their ripped and dirty clothes. The photo is pretty negative.
  6. My response to this photo is sympathy. I feel bad for the kids because their situation is obviously not good, as evidenced by the picture. I wish I could help these kids have a better life.
  7. The first question I would ask would be what the kids’ names are. I would like to get to know them better. The second one would be asking the photographer why he took this picture I would like to have his perspective on the picture.
